what is Thermal actuator?



The thermal actuator is a critical component of the powertrain that helps in controlling and regulating the temperature of the engine. It is a device that has a thermally-actuated valve mechanism that helps in controlling the flow of coolant through the radiator.


The thermal actuator can be subdivided into three sections:The thermostatic valve、The control circuit、The electric motor/pneumatic actuator。


What is Thermostatic Valve?


It is a type of valve that has a bimetallic strip that expands or contracts according to the change in temperature. The bimetallic strip is made up of two different metals, for example, steel and copper. When these two metals are heated, they expand or contract at different rates. The difference in expansion rate causes the strip to bend or flex. This bending or flexing causes the opening and closing of the valve when exposed to heat or cold. The thermostatic valve is usually attached to the water pump. The water pump is responsible for circulating coolant through the engine, which helps in maintaining its temperature. The thermostatic valve controls the flow of coolant through the engine by either opening or closing depending on the temperature of the engine. When the engine cools down and reaches a specific temperature, it opens allowing coolant to flow through it. When it heats up, it closes and stops coolant from flowing through it. The thermostatic valve is used for regulating the temperature of the engine in order to keep it at an optimum level for efficient performance.


What is Control Circuit?


The control circuit consists of a sensor that measures the temperature inside the engine and sends this information to a computer (ECM) which controls all components of powertrain system including thermal actuators. The ECM then sends this information to an actuator which controls the opening and closing of valves based on this information. For example, if there is high temperature inside an engine, then it will close its valves to stop coolant from flowing through it until its temperature drops down to an optimum level. This way, it helps in maintaining optimum temperatures inside an engine for efficient performance.
